Tune into Management Roadshow

The ‘Tune into Management Roadshow’ was created as part of the Management Charter Initiative (MCI) to raise awareness of the importance of Management Skills training with undergraduates. During the first three years of its existence, the employer-led Management Charter Initiative (MCI) became a powerful force for change in the field of management education and training. Leading business voices such as Sir John Banham (Director General of the CBI at the time), Sir John Harvey-Jones (CEO of ICI at the time), and Sir Bob Reid (Chairman of Shell at the time) addressed arena’s of students, inspiring undergraduates with the story of their own career development as well as emphasising the value of gaining NVQ qualifications in management alongside their operational specialism.

Good managers can make or break a career—students should know that and learn how to find employers who develop them.

Tune into Management National Campaign Leader Ali Bolton double headed each roadshow along side the industry magnates with question and answer sessions for a truly interactive experience for the student audiences. Students left the event armed with a list of ten questions to ask their future employers to test their commitment to management training.

A top priority was raising awareness of how effective management drives career growth and giving students tools to assess it.

The aim of the Tune into Management Roadshow was several-fold:
• to help students understand how good management directly impacts their career and full-fill their potential
• to empower them to make informed choices about their future employment
• to create upward pressure on employers to sign up to the MCI Code of Practice
• to highlight to undergraduates the importance of gaining NVQ management qualifications alongside their workplace training (be it engineering, accountancy etc)

As a result 1,000 British companies pledged to adopt the Code of Practice and commit to structured management training for undergraduates, junior and middle managers. The Management Charter Initiative (MCI) redefined management education in the UK through their focus on real-world competence over academic theory and through the development of nationally recognised NVQ qualifications in management.
